Starfish at Skellie’s Pool

At the end of May many starfish washed up on Fish Hoek, Glencairn and Simon’s Town beaches.

Our awesome local community and Afrioceans Conservation Alliance quickly jumped into action and collected hundreds of starfish and took them to Skellie’s pool near Sunnycove and Glencairn tidal pool.

We don’t quite know why so many starfish washed up ashore; it may have been the storm, I don’t know?

What I do know is that it is absolutely inspiring that we live in an area where people love nature and actually protects it! The Fish Hoek Beach Page also reported on a Subantarctic Fur Seal’s and Elephant Seal’s presence on the beach and asked people to allow it some space to rest after the terrible storm we had last week.

The big starfish release event is taking place tomorrow, where all the starfish will be collected and released into deeper waters in Simon’s Town.

Today, Kai and I went to say our goodbyes and we also saved another baby starfish and placed it at Skellie’s pool.

We found this tiny starfish hidden between the kelp on the beach. We placed on her a rock at Skellie's pool, hope she makes it!
