Deon, a successful 26 year old, had the world at his feet. Many referred to him as the Tony Hawks of the Flats. Competing at an international level at the age of 16. His talent identified by chance on the streets of the CBD. Skateboarding, his passion, his getaway from the poverty at home.

His mother, a domestic worker, didn’t quite understand her son’s obsession with “chasing traffic”, as she fondly referred to it. She worked long hours, 6 days a week. Her social status, her son’s academic prestige and sporting talent ensured him a spot at a prestige high school in the City Centre.

However a few weeks ago, Deon, a qualified international coach with a Masters in Sports Science was about to embark on the most exciting career opportunity; developing public skateparks in low income areas through an international foundation who has earmarked South Africa as a country with enormous potential and talented youth.

Whilst sorting out his mother’s belongings a few days after her funeral he came across a small box filled with letters yet to be posted. These letters dated back to the early ‘90s and all addressed to “Baas Marais”.

Thinking nothing of it Deon started reading his mother’s notes . . .

“19 Oktober 1989
Baas Marais,

Ek wil meneer net laat weet dat my swangerskap goed verloop.

Liefste Anna”

“5 Februarie 1990
Baas Marais,

Ek weet meneer wil niks weet nie, maar my seuntjie, Deon is nou twee weke oud. Hy is die oulikste mensie ooit. Ek is so innig life vir hom. Dinge gaan maar broek swaar, maar my familie is daar vir my, vir ons.

Liefste Anna”

“23 Augustus 1992
Baas Marais,

My hart het stil gestaan!

. . Meneer was nooit lief vir my nie . . .

Anna”

No comment would ever do your posts justice Chev. You truly are an inspiration.

Great post. I simply cannot imagine how someone would even begin to pick up the pieces in this situation.
