Encounters that Inspires Hope

For some, their art is their glue that keeps things together when the world around them is falling apart. For some it is the only thing that empowers them to not give in to the pressures of the decaying society that surrounds them . . .

In 2015 I shared my encounter with one such artist, someone who has the ability to transform his observations into lyrics that later comes alive in a small recording studio/bedroom.

Having grown up in the same community, Ocean View, oblivious of his challenges as a child, he inspires. Never losing hope, his art the gateway to sanctuary when the community outside the four walls of his small flat succumbs to the impact of drug addiction and violent crime.

Often speaking on the train or streets of Muizenberg and Fish Hoek, I’ve come to learn that Brandon Olivier, aka Skiddi, has been writing lyrics since the age of 14, collaborating with the boys on the street, creating new beats by stomping  their rhythmic feet.

Inspired by his Creator, Brandon has risen to the challenge, and refers to his very difficult childhood and life obstacles as the driving force behind his passion, keeping him motivated to not give up, and to not give in.

Having self-funded his first music video, “Move Your Body“, set in Muizenberg, he hopes that this immense financial sacrifice AND investment in himself will allow him the exposure he needs to garner support and guidance as an artist.

“Achieving my goal is within me, all it takes is hard work and dedication” – Brandon Olivier – aka – Skiddi.

Also read “Listen to the Whispers” and “Skreeu Innie Nagte” to get to the heart of THIS post. Skiddi is also using his artistic expression to bring about social change, and awareness, of the plight of the many homeless people living on the streets of South Africa. Watch his project video below.
